- Activated: A device Witina manages: the gateway polls it, Witina watches it for problems, and it counts toward your plan. See Bring devices under management.
- Adopt: To match a UniFi site to the customer region it belongs to, so a gateway there reads it. See Connect UniFi Site Manager.
- Alert rule: Something Witina checks for. When a rule finds a problem, it opens an incident. See Alerts and incidents.
- Alias: A second address range, in 100.96.0.0/12, that a VPN session reaches a site’s network by, so a range that clashes with the technician’s own network still works. See How the VPN works.
- Claim: To connect a newly installed gateway to your organization and place it in a region. See Install a gateway.
- Connection: How a gateway reaches one device: SNMP, SSH, Telnet, HTTP or HTTPS, or a console, with the credential to use. A device can have several.
- Console server: A host that gives access to devices’ serial consoles. Witina reaches it over SSH or Telnet. See Remote access.
- Context: Where a role applies: your whole organization, or one division. What you can do at any moment depends on the context you’re working in.
- Controller: Something that manages devices for you, such as a UniFi console. Witina reads the devices through it.
- Credential: A password, SNMP community, or API key that a gateway uses to reach devices. It belongs to a region, is kept only on that region’s gateways, and can’t be read back.
- Customer: A division you’ve marked as a customer, in MSP mode. See Add customers.
- Destination: Where a notification goes: an email address, a browser, or a shared Slack, Teams, or webhook destination. See Route notifications.
- Division: A part of your organization, such as a department or, for an MSP, a client. Regions, gateways, devices, and people can belong to one.
- Endpoint: A computer, phone, printer, or other device the gateway sees on the network but doesn’t manage. Endpoints don’t count toward your plan.
- Flow record: A record of one connection made through the VPN: when, where to, how much each way, and the gateway’s address and port as the site saw it. See Sessions and flow records.
- Gateway: A small VM, appliance, or container on a network you manage. It discovers and polls devices, holds their credentials, and connects out to Witina. See How Witina works for an MSP.
- Health: A customer’s overall state, healthy, warning, or critical: the worst of a set of checks. See The customers dashboard.
- Incident: A problem an alert rule found, which you acknowledge and resolve. Its severity is Info, Low, Medium, High, or Critical.
- Lifecycle: A customer’s stage for your own records: prospect, onboarding, active, suspended, or offboarded. It doesn’t change monitoring or billing.
- Maintenance window: A scheduled period when alerts are silenced across your organization.
- MSP mode: The organization setting that turns on customers and the customers dashboard.
- Policy: A rule that lets teams connect through the VPN to some or all of your sites, for up to a set time. Nobody connects without one. See Set up the VPN.
- Provisioning token: A one-time code that claims a gateway into a particular region.
- Region: A part of a network where every IP address means one thing and the region’s gateways can reach its devices: usually a location, or a logical chunk of a network. See Regions.
- Role: A set of permissions, such as Administrator or Viewer, that a team holds in a context. See Give your team and your customers access.
- Rolled up: An incident filed under the one that caused it, such as “can’t connect” under “gateway offline”. It stays open but doesn’t notify on its own.
- Route: An organization rule that sends matching incidents to shared destinations.
- Session: One technician’s VPN connection to one site, from one computer, until it’s turned off or ends. See Sessions and flow records.
- Session recording: A replay of a terminal session, or of a session Witina opened to set up a device or read its configuration. It keeps what the device sent back, not what was typed.
- Site: On the VPN pages, a region: the network a VPN session connects to.
- Site Manager: UniFi’s cloud service for managing many consoles. Witina uses it to list your consoles and sites.
- Split DNS: Looking up names in a site’s own DNS domains at the site’s DNS servers, through the VPN, while every other lookup uses the technician’s own DNS.
- Team: A group of people. Teams hold roles in contexts, and that’s how people get access.
- Technician VPN: Witina’s VPN, which puts a technician’s computer on a customer’s network through the gateway already there. See How the VPN works.
- Transport: A host or proxy a gateway connects through to reach a device, such as a jump host or a console server.
